Panjim, Goa, 27th April 2021: Goa Tamnar Transmission Project Limited (GTTPL) initiated the distribution of essential school supplies covering 20 government schools in Goa. GTTPL handed over the school items to the school representatives in the presence of MLA Sanvordem and Hon’ble minister of PWD Shri Deepak Pauskar, as part of its community commitment.

The school supplies consist of furniture items and learning materials, positively impacting more than 700 students across the government schools in South Goa. GTTPL undertook this timely intervention to ensure an enriching educational experience for the children.

Ninad Pitale, Project Head, GTTPL, said, “Children are the future of Goa and providing a holistic educational environment for these bright youngsters is something that we care about deeply. We are happy to provide these essential items which will benefit the students in their learning journey.”

  • Proactively plants more than 1000 fruit bearing trees across four locations in Goa 
  • Plantation drive to benefit people of Goa by developing livelihood opportunities

Panjim, Goa, 11th March 2021: In line with its commitment to ensure sustainable infrastructure development of Goa, Goa Tamnar Transmission Project Limited (GTTPL) implemented plantation of 1000 fruit bearing trees across the state. GTTPL conducted this proactive plantation drive in collaboration with the local communities across four locations – Nagao Church, land parcels including Communidade land in Colvale, and Navelim, in Goa. The company reached out to the people to understand their needs and implemented the plantation drive in a manner that will support the locals with livelihood opportunities.

Speaking on the initiative, Ninad Pitale, Project Head, GTTPL said, “The key highlight of this afforestation drive is the livelihood benefit it will generate for the locals in the form of an additional source of income. In this drive, we have planted more than 1000 fruit bearing trees. Once these trees attain their full growth, they would be an invaluable source of not just clean air but growth and prosperity for the communities.”

He added, “GTTPL aims to make Goa self-sufficient in terms of energy requirements while conserving the state’s pristine environment. As a company, we have taken utmost caution and care in the project planning to protect the biodiversity of the region, and these proactive afforestation and plantation drives are a step in that direction. We intend to cover more regions in future as part of our afforestation efforts.”

In addition to plantation, GTTPL has provided drip irrigation system at all the sites to ensure regular water supply to the plants and this facility would be provided till the upcoming monsoon. Earlier, as part of the compensatory afforestation, the project had planted 9367 trees across various locations in Goa (Sankhli, Codar, Usgao and Sangod), more than what was mandated as per the compensatory afforestation rules of the Forest Department.

Panjim, Goa, 03 March 2021: Goa Tamnar Transmission Project Limited (GTTPL), an Inter State Transmission System project envisaged by the Ministry of Power in 2015 to address Goa’s growing power demand, announced that it had proactively initiated the Biodiversity Impact Assessment (BIA) study in 2018 and subsequently published the Biodiversity Management Plan (BMP) in 2019 for its transmission line corridor in the protected area of Goa. Biodiversity Impact Assessment is a decision-support tool that enables biodiversity inclusive development, planning and implementation. As per the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, there is no statutory requirement to conduct BIA if the area of diversion is below 50 Ha in protected areas. Although, GTTPL’s proposed diversion in protected area is only 11.54 Ha, the company, during the conceptualization stage of the project in 2018, voluntarily conducted the study and developed the Biodiversity Management Plan to guide its planning and execution.

The BIA/BMP highlights that the construction process will cause no permanent damage to the environment, and any disruption will be recoverable over the medium term. Some of the adopted mitigation measures as proposed in the report are as below:

  • Animal protection measures like culverts would be built on approach road to substation, to ensure safe passage of animals 
  • Bird diverters on the conductor and perch rejecters on transmission tower would be installed along the transmission line corridor
  • Free movement of animals on the ground allowed and minimum impact on the movement of birds due to tower height of 45-54 meters
  • To minimise even the temporary impact during construction, in the forest area, the construction practices adopted will ensure that there is no movement of vehicles beyond the last motorable road point. Tower parts will be transported to the location by head loading.
  • No heavy machinery will be used for construction, no campsites will be placed inside the forest area and drones would be used to enable stringing to further mitigate any likely damages.

GTTPL is committed to sustainable infrastructure development and has taken utmost caution and care in the project planning to protect the biodiversity of the region. The project will provide the residents and small businesses in Goa with a highly reliable power feed by opening access to both Western and Southern grids, thereby reducing the dependence of this region on expensive and polluting diesel-based power.

Panjim, 13th January 2021: In line with its commitment to protect the rich biodiversity of the state of Goa, the Goa Tamnar Transmission Project Limited (GTTPL) has implemented an extensive afforestation drive across various locations in the region – Sankhli (Goa Institute of Management), Usgaon, Sangod, and Codar. As on date, GTTPL has planted a total of 9367 trees in the land allocated by the Goa Forest Department.

Power shortage is a major impediment for development and growth for Goa’s economy. The Goa Tamnar Transmission Project Limited (GTTPL) project is an Inter State Transmission System envisaged by Ministry of Power in 2015 to create an additional source of power for Goa and ensure that the region is self-sufficient in terms of energy requirements.

For the Sangod substation that the project is constructing, 2670 trees were cut on private land (substation) for which all necessary permissions were accorded by the Goa Forest Department. As per the compensatory afforestation rules of the Forest Department, GTTPL is expected to plant three times the number of trees felled, which stood at 8010. The project, however, has planted a total of 9367 trees which is more than what was mandated.

Further, the soil composition of the land provided by the Forest Department for the compensatory afforestation, was primarily laterite which was not conducive for tree plantation. GTTPL reclaimed this land through addition of a conducive topsoil and drip irrigation arrangements to ensure proper growth of all the fruit bearing trees planted as part of the plantation drive. 

GTTPL has also taken utmost caution and care, right from project planning to mitigation, to put together a thoughtfully optimized route for the 400kV Xeldem – Narendra LILO Transmission Line. The route was chosen to avoid the Mollem National Park completely and only involves a minimal unavoidable passage of 2.51 km through Bhagwan Mahaveer sanctuary.

The project will enhance the current power transmission capacity, quality and reliability which will boost industrial and commercial activities, especially the tourism industry.
